Acquired essence (后天之精 Hòu Tiān Zhī Jīng) in Traditional Chinese Medicine is the portion of Jing (Essence 精 Jīng) that is nourished, cultivated and renewed after birth by diet, breathing, sleep, physical activity, energetic practices and lifestyle. It complements inherited essence (先天之精 Xiān Tiān Zhī Jīng) which is transmitted by parents and constitutes the basic genetic and constitutional endowment.

  • Nourishes and renews Jing after birth
  • Produced by diet, breathing and lifestyle
  • Complements inherited essence (先天之精 Xiān Tiān Zhī Jīng)
  • Maintains vitality, fertility and longevity
  • Depends on digestion and transformation quality
  • Can partially compensate for weak inherited essence

Acquired essence is the vitality capital we build day after day. Like a savings account fed by meals, breath, sleep and movement, it can compensate for a modest inheritance and transform a fragile constitution into lasting vitality.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine

In TCM theory, Jing (Essence 精 Jīng) divides into two categories:

  • Inherited essence (先天之精 Xiān Tiān Zhī Jīng, “Essence of Former Heaven”): transmitted by parents at conception, it determines basic constitution, innate vitality, growth potential, reproduction and longevity. It is finite, precious and must be preserved
  • Acquired essence (后天之精 Hòu Tiān Zhī Jīng, “Essence of Later Heaven”): produced after birth by diet, breathing and lifestyle, it nourishes, renews and complements inherited essence. It is renewable, extensible and entirely depends on lifestyle quality

Acquired essence is produced by three main processes:

  1. Digestive transformation (运化 Yùn Huà): Spleen (脾 Pí) and Stomach (胃 Wèi) transform foods into Gu Qi (谷气 Gǔ Qì, Grain Qi) and Jing Qi (精气 Jīng Qì, Essence Qi). Diet, digestion and assimilation quality directly determines quantity and quality of acquired essence
  2. Breathing (呼吸 Hū Xī): Lung (肺 Fèi) captures Qi of Heaven (空气 Kōng Qì, Air Qi) and combines it with Grain Qi to form Zong Qi (宗气 Zōng Qì, Chest Qi). This Qi nourishes Heart, circulates in vessels and contributes to Blood and essence production
  3. Sleep and rest (寐 Mèi): deep and restorative sleep, particularly during night (10pm-6am), enables Kidney (肾 Shèn) to store Jing, Liver (肝 Gān) to store Blood, and all organs to regenerate. Insufficient or poor quality sleep exhausts acquired essence

Acquired essence circulates throughout the body, nourishes Zang-Fu organs, bones, marrow, brain, hair, teeth, reproduction, growth and development. It is mainly stored in Kidneys (肾 Shèn), which govern Jing and reproduction.

Practical Applications

In Chinese dietary therapy, acquired essence is cultivated by quality diet, healthy digestion, deep breathing, sufficient sleep and balanced lifestyle. Recommended foods include whole grains (rice, millet, quinoa, buckwheat), seasonal vegetables, fresh fruits, quality proteins (fish, poultry, eggs, legumes), nuts and seeds (sesame, walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds), seaweed, mushrooms, goji berries, jujubes, dates, lotus seeds, and bone and marrow broths.

Lifestyle directly influences acquired essence quality: regular and moderate meals, attentive chewing, peaceful digestion without stress or screens, varied and balanced diet, sufficient hydration, deep abdominal breathing (particularly in fresh air and nature), moderate physical activity that circulates Qi and Blood (walking, tai chi, qi gong, yoga, swimming), sufficient sleep (7 to 9 hours per night, ideally 10pm-6am), stress management that preserves Shen and Qi, and balanced sexuality that does not dissipate Jing strengthen acquired essence. Irregular meals, industrial and processed foods, overeating, malnutrition, superficial and sedentary breathing, sleep deprivation, physical and mental overwork, chronic stress, sexual excesses, drugs, alcohol and tobacco exhaust acquired essence.

Concrete Examples

A patient presenting with acquired essence exhaustion after prolonged pregnancy and breastfeeding may experience deep fatigue that does not improve with rest, abundant hair loss, dry and dull skin, fragile nails, deep lower back pain, decreased libido, anaemia tendency, pale little-coated tongue, and fine weak pulse.
